Dr Pepper Baked Beans 6

Baked beans are the perfect side for any backyard BBQ or tailgating party. They go with anything and everything and are super easy to make from scratch. Homemade are so much better than those pre made cans filled with high fructose corn syrup you can buy at the grocery. This recipe uses Dr Pepper to give the baked beans a unique and tasty flavor that is sure to be a hit at your next BBQ. Speaking of Dr Pepper

Dr Pepper is believed to have been invented in 1885 by a pharmacist named Charles Alderton who happened to work at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco Texas. Legend has it that Alderton loved to tinker with the soda fountain when he wasn’t mixing up medicine. He loved the way the drug store smelled and came up with a special blend of syrups to try to taste like that smell. No one knows how it came to be named Dr Pepper, but it’s the perfect name for a very unique tasting soda.

Here’s the ingredients.

In a medium saucepan or Dutch oven, cook the bacon over medium heat until almost crispy. Remove the bacon and cool on paper towels.

Sauté the onion in the bacon fat until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Use the Dr Pepper to deglaze the pan. Scrape all of those wonderful brown bits off the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Drain and rinse the beans and then add them to the onions. Throw in everything else – molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire, dry mustard, garlic, salt and pepper.

Bring to a boil on the stove then cover and cook in a 350° oven for 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how thick you like it. If you prefer soupier beans, take them out after 20 minutes.

We like our beans on the thicker side, so 30 minutes works out about right for us.

These tasty beans have a unique and sweet flavor thanks to the Dr Pepper, but they in no way taste like Dr Pepper. Enjoy!
